Since 1998
We publish about a dozen books a year, and we intend to keep it that way.
Horizon began in the back room of a bookshop on Hawthorne Boulevard with four writers, a shared credit card, and a manuscript nobody else would take. Twenty-five years on we are still independent, still small, and still run by the people whose names are on the spines.
Our editorial board is made up entirely of Horizon authors. Writers keep their rights, share in the revenue of the press, and have a vote on what we publish next. It is a slower way to run a publishing house, and we think the books are better for it.
We were late to audio, and we came at it differently. Rather than licensing a handful of titles to a studio, we partnered with SwishAudio so that any reader can generate a narrated edition of any book we publish, in the voice they prefer, at no extra cost.
It means our whole backlist is audio, not just the twenty titles a studio would have picked. You can try it on the Audiobook Creator page.
We read unsolicited manuscripts twice a year, in March and September. Full guidelines, and reading-fee waivers for writers who need them, are posted at the start of each window.
